Registrations are now open for the Australasian Flow Cytometry Group 31st Annual Scientific Meeting. This year the ASM will be held at The Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle, Western Australia from August 12-15, 2008. This is a 3 day meeting featuring plenary talks each day, concurrent clinical and research symposia and a poster session. Our confirmed speakers include: Dr Matthew Helbert (Consultant Immunologist St Mary's Hospital, UK): immunological monitoring for HIV infection, drug efficacy and side effects. Prof David Price (Professor of Infection and Immunity, Cardiff University School of Medicine, UK): polychromatic flow cytometry techniques and adaptive T cell immunity in response to HIV, SIV and CMA infection. Dr Catherine Cole (Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist/Haematologist, Princess Margaret Hospital, WA): use of minimal residual disease studies by flow cytometry in childhood ALL. Dr Joanne Joseph (Staff Specialist, Department of Haematology, St Vincent's Hospital, NSW): use of flow cytometry to assess platelet function and activation. Dr Marian Sturm (Production Manager, Cell & Tissue Therapies WA): mesenchymal stromal cells. And Prof Fiona Wood (2005 Australian of the Year, Chairman McComb Research Foundation, Director Burn Service WA, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, WA): flow cytometry as part of a multidisciplinary clinical and scientific team approach to the treatment of burn injury. The meeting will be preceded by a full day techniques workshop on Tuesday 12th August 2008 and will be held at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. The workshop will focus on technical aspects of flow cytometry such as instrument set-up, QC, fluorochrome choice, panel selection, multicolour flow, experimental controls, SOPs, data analysis and rare cell detection, and will be followed by open panel discussions. We have also included a social programme to provide registrants with the opportunity to catch up with old colleagues and make new networks. These include the icebreaker at Little Creatures Brewery on Tuesday August 12th and the meeting dinner at the West Australian Maritime Museum on Thursday August14th.
