Greetings, Laura Teodori and I are the current cochairs of the ISAC Membership Services Committee, I am not on council and therefore not party to financial information as to who is or is not staying at the official Congress hotel. I do however know that Laura, who is on council, is paying her own way, and staying in a cheap hotel (42 euros) in Budapest. As MSC chairs, We have distributed travel funds, as for every congress, to help as many students as possible come to congress from less developed countries as well as North Americans and Europeans. For Budapest we are helping 57 students from around the world, with just enough money to get their cheap airfare and a cheap hotel or hostel and student registration. In addition, We have 18 students and young investigators in the ISAC Scholar's program who have travel funds earmarked for Congress, funds which are solicited from generous donors from outside sources cited on the ISAC web site. We also have a special fund for this Congress to help pay registration and a little travel money for investigators from the Eastern european countries, from Poland to Russia and down to Turkey, so that they are able to attend Congress that is being held in their part of the world. Application deadlines for all these travel funds have been posted and available on the Congress Web site. We pushed to have the links for cheap hotels and hostel information posted on the Congress website to make this Congress more accessible to students and investigators from less advantaged countries. We agree that this Congress is far and expensive. We have been doing whatever we can to help those least able to afford it to join us there. We agree with Bob Zucker that the valuable educational aspect of Congress should be available to those members who cannot attend, and that this information as well as education and web based learning responsibilities of ISAC are of the highest priority for the immediate future. We take this opportunity to put in a plug for the MSC sponsored Professional Skills Workshop at Budapest, geared towards students with talks by illustrious ISAC speakers on topics such as oral presentations, what a journal looks for in a paper, how to prepare US and European grant applications. As your membership services cochairs (until Budapest) Laura and I are happy to have your input.
