Hi F., please re-read the instructions carefully - I'm sure it doesn't really say it's incompatible, because it is. What is incompatible is (concentrated) sodium azide solutions and lead plumbing. A chemical reaction may occur between the azide and the metal, leading to explosive (not necessarily exploding) pipes - lead azide is used as an explosive and I seem to recall reading that the explosive in car air bags is some azide as well. Read http://www.ehs.neu.edu/naazide1.html for more info on sodium azide itself - it stipulates clearly the sodium salt is NOT explosive, and readily soluble in water.
