We've traditionally made up 7-AAD in 95% ethanol and stored it at -20C - ethanol is still liquid at this temperature, so you do not need to thaw it to use it (like you would for DMSO). I expect methanol would behave the same. In our hands, 7-AAD seems to work for quite a while as a viability stain when stored this way, but its ability to stoichiometrically bind DNA seems to decline after extended storage (1 year). Basically why this DNA prob (I prepared in Methanol) shouldn't be fluorescent after a year? and is there any other solvent for longer storage?
