Dear All,
I had 12 replies to this post. 7 use UP's 1
uses a line filter, 2 were interested in the responses and 2
respondents did not use a UPS.
A UPS will not provide any
protection against a lightning stike. The best protection against a
massive voltage surge from a lightning strike is to physically unplug the
instrument from the power point.
The primary use of a
UPS is to remove any spikes or drops in voltage, that may be caused by
other equipment or the age of the wiring in your building.
If there
is a loss of power, a UPS will give you between 15 minutes and 2 hours of
running time to save your data/finish your experiment.
The power
supply (step down transformer in Australia (240V to 110V)) will reduce
the intensity of those spikes or drops, but, NOT remove them.
My BD
service engineer would not say I had to use a UPS but he suggested that due
to the power problems in this building it would be highly
recommended.
Interestingly, MMRI just purchased a confocal microscope
and the manufacturer insists on a UPS being installed (but does not supply
one!).
Many thanks.
Regards
Rob W.
