A collaborator in my lab is wondering how to detect cell death other than by using dyes. In his experiments, he can detect dead cells using staining methods with annexin V/PI, eosin Y and other exclusion dyes. However, cells are found dead only 30 min after the beginning of the treatment, a time-point that appears to early for any standard apoptotic pathways. Mitochondria membrane potential change is also detected. Cells are only treated with a lectin, so mechanical action on cell membrane is excluded. Any suggestion to confirm/infirm the death of the cells?
