James in reply to the question on protocols - let me direct you to Current Protocols in Cytometry - http://www.wiley.com/legacy/cp/cpc/toc.htm#11 Chapter 11 "Microbial Applications" lists 16 protocols for flow based microbial study (I note that 2 new applications in CPC are not currently in the web table of contents.)
