" The Cell-Dyn 4000 is essentially implementing a "two-platform" CD4 count on a single instrument; it uses the hematology tube to get the WBC and per cent lymphocytes, and the immunofluorescence tubes for CD3/CD4 and CD3/CD8. Given the relatively long gestation period, I expected Abbott to add more in the way of immunophenotyping capability to the instrument; I'm not sure why they didn't. Unless I'm mistaken, the Cell-Dyn 4000's analyses do fall within the CDC guidelines, and there are other clinical instruments, for example, the BD FACSCount, that just do CD3/CD4 and CD3/CD8. -Howard
